Harvard sue U.S over plan to revoke students visas.
Trump administration released a decision for colleges and universities to start online lectures for students.US Immigration and Customs Enforcements notified colleges that International students will be forced to leave the country if the lectures are entirely shifted to online.
Describing this rule as cruel and reckless,on Wednesday, Harvard university and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology filled a federal lawsuit against Trump administrations decision bar International students from staying in U.S
The lawsuit represented a swift response to an unexpected order issued last week by the federal government, as universities rush to protect the status of thousands of international students. It also marks a new battle line in the war between President Trump and education leaders over how to safely reopen schools in this pandemic situtation.
" It appears that it was designed purposefully to place pressure on colleges and universities to open their oncampus classrooms for in-person instruction this fall, without regard to concerns for the health and safety of students, instructors, and other,” Harvard President Lawrence Bacow said in a statement Wednesday.
"Massachusetts is home to thousands of international students who should not fear deportation or be forced to put their health and safety at risk in order to advance their education,” Maura Healey, the attorney general, said in a statement. “This decision from ICE is cruel, it’s illegal, and we will sue to stop it.”
Harvard is planning to teach its classes entirely online over the next year, and many other universities are planning a hybrid model, with some in-person instruction but mostly remote classes. M.I.T. will have a small selection of in-person classes, but said that most will be online.
The two universities said that the new directive would prevent many of their 9,000 combined international students — and hundreds of thousands of students at other universities across the country — from staying in the United States.
